What makes this page a BFD: A front page that dares you not to read it




 
 
We fully expected newspapers to blow out the Anna Nicole story. But they didn't. RedEye went big and so did the Sun Journal, but almost other papers were quite subdued in their coverage. The Oklahoman asked the right question: "How did she die?"

The Sun Herald had a powerful centerpiece. The Beaver County Times went with a novel, three-story front. The Lawrence Journal-World made the local commute look more painful than it probably is. The Anchorage Daily News had an amazing photo of the big, bad wolf.

Today's BFD is the Lincoln Journal Star, for their coverage of a death-obsessed man who kept gravestones in a storage unit.

Lincoln breaks some important rules with this page – with an ambiguous headline and an overabundance of reversed text type. But they didn't break the most important rule: Never be dull. This page doesn't succeed on every level, but it dares you not to read it.

In contrast, most American front pages are dull every day. Today provides a case in point: the Anna Nicole story provided countless opportunities and limitless images for compelling and informative front pages. But most papers didn't rise to the bait. If the Anna Nicole of South America had died suddenly, it's safe to assume that South American front pages would have dazzled their readers in ways that would put us in the U.S. to shame.

The Press-Telegram called her a "bombshell." But for the most part, today's front pages lacked the commensurate bombast.

A newspaper war, that is. The Sunday Star Times, New Zealand's largest newspaper, faces fierce competition on the newsstand from two tabloids. So it was redesigned to improve its above-the-fold presentation. The complete story will appear here and in the next issue of SND's DESIGN.
 
 






 
The Californian's redesign earned it a spot on Editor & Publisher's list of “Ten That Do it Right.” According to E&P, Bakersfield is appealing to its “really, really conservative market with a really, really radical redesign.”

And it’s working.

The Eureka (CA) Reporter was just a 6,000-circ. weekly in 2004. Our radical yet elegant redesign helped this startup weekly grow to a daily in less than two years. The Reporter goes head-to-head with an established daily owned by Dean Singleton, who told The San Francisco Chronicle last month that his competitor, “does some good design things.” The Society of News Design agrees – they cited this redesign as one of the best in the world.
