Several papers went big with Ash Wednesday photos today, including The Plain Dealer, the Rocky Mountain News, The Orange County Register and the OC Post. As is often the case, the OC Post ate The Register's lunch by using the same photo to better effect.

Speaking of cropping, The Palm Beach Post underplayed a powerful image that deserved four-column play and a tighter crop. In contrast, The Des Moines Register showed how to play a remarkable wrestling photo.

For its traffic tie-up folo, The Patriot-News played follow the Eagle, picking up the headline from yesterday's Reading Eagle.

Link's cover was arresting. Tbt featured the remarkable story of a city manager undergoing a sex change. Newsday painted it black. The Virginian-Pilot did the new math on Iraq. The News Sentinel made effective use of white space. The Star-Telegram asked a good question.

The StarTribune used a six-column photo with a story about a deadly explosion. The Republican American also used a six-column photo with a story about a deadly explosion, but the RA's headline and single-copy presentation was better, making it today's BFD.

Too many papers are bound by the tyranny of modular makeup. Not so the RA. Where is it written that every story must form a rectangle? The readers of The New York Times aren't troubled by doglegs and bumping heads. Chances are most readers elsewhere don't care. Modular makeup is a rather new technique – that's why the makeup style that preceded it is called "traditional" makeup.

Modular makeup is often an impediment to effective single-copy presentation. We should worry less about squaring off and more about selling newspapers.

The Californian's redesign earned it a spot on Editor & Publisher's list of “Ten That Do it Right.” According to E&P, Bakersfield is appealing to its “really, really conservative market with a really, really radical redesign.”
