There were more than a score of Scorsese headlines today, rightfully so, as one of America's best directors finally won a directorial Oscar. Here's a sample:
OC Post: "At last,"
Link: "Scorsese scores,"
The Honolulu Advertiser: "GoldFella,"
The Birmingham News: "With Departed, Scorsese arrives."
RedEye bested the
Chicago Sun-Times with a more celebratory photo. Two of the country's biggest papers, the
Los Angeles Times and
The Washington Post, had two of the weakest presentations. No paper did a particularly outstanding job with the Oscars, despite having so many days to prepare for so few outcomes, so we had to look elsewhere for today's BFD.
The Des Moines Register had the best of the Midwest storm aftermath pages. It was barely impossible to avoid the
News Sentinel's front-page photo. The
HeraldNews asked a good question.
Today's BFD is the Bradenton Herald for its grabber headline and supporting graphics.
"Kidnapping for money" – how can you not read that story? The Herald backed this up with a photo from the scene, mug shots of the key players in the story, a locator map and secondary heads that addressed the most pressing issues.
Room for improvement: Two stories beneath the lead photo jump too quickly. On a news day this big, it would have been better to move the "Florida tax reform" story inside to make more room for kidnapping-related text.
About the criteria for choosing each day's BFD:
The goal is not to merely pick a beautiful and flawless front page from the countless number that are published each year – the SND contest does a pretty good job of that by allowing anyone to enter their very best pages regardless of when they were published.
In contrast, BFD picks the best front page published on one particular day. Based on that narrower criteria, it's likely that the best front design each day will be less than perfect. Clearly, there will be better front pages published on other days by other papers. But that doesn't negate the fact that we think each day's BFD was better than rest, its flaws notwithstanding.
However, if you think a better page was published that day, by all means please mention it in the comments section below.
