Sunday is the biggest day for single-copy sales. Our research indicates that two kinds of stories are the most effective drivers of impulse buys: Pocketbook issues – such as these stories from the fronts of The State and The Lima News; and health/personal safety stories – such as this one from the front of the News & Record.
The newspaper with the best front design today is The Sunday Enterprise for a high-impact, highly relevant front page that was designed to attract occasional readers.
Stories about personal safety drive single-copy sales. And no issue of personal safety trumps the safety of our children. The Enterprise's bold display of this story with a blunt, declarative headline and a life-sized image is bound to get attention.
This page also made excellent use of color, concentrating on red, yellow, black and white (the four most powerful colors on newsprint) while reserving blue for the nameplate to separate it from everything else.
Room for improvement: This page plays great above the fold, but there was too much reversed text beneath the fold. There had to be a better way, such as using larger type in short form as The Des Moines Register did last Friday and last Sunday.

The ISJ shows its passion for Pocatello by filling its fronts with faces – featuring five or more per front per day. You can't be too local and you can't run too many faces of local people, because everyone loves to hear these words: "I saw your picture in the paper." See the pages.
The Californian's redesign earned it a spot on Editor & Publisher's list of “Ten That Do it Right.” According to E&P, Bakersfield is appealing to its “really, really conservative market with a really, really radical redesign.”
And its working.
Circulation stops are down and revenue is up – over a thousand inches in the redesigned real estate section alone.

The Eureka (CA) Reporter was just a 6,000-circ. weekly in 2004. Our radical yet elegant redesign helped this startup weekly grow to a daily in less than two years. The Reporter goes head-to-head with an established daily owned by Dean Singleton, who told The San Francisco Chronicle last month that his competitor, “does some good design things.” The Society of News Design agrees – they cited this redesign as one of the best in the world.
