What makes this page a BFD: A story that's sure to sell.

 
 
Check out the two tightly-cropped mugs in today's Orange County Register. The Rocky Mountain News had a similar story and presentation – without the unfortunate juxtaposition.

The San Francisco Chronicle had it in the bag, but why oh why did they leave a pica of white space above the wrist? It reeks of dismemberment. In contrast, the fingers in The Wichita Eagle were in good hands.

Tbt had a rhyming time. The Las Vegas Sun was an apple polisher with a novel approach. The Oregonian gets a Bee for effort. The Caller Times had the data. The Roanoke Times got in your face.

Once again, the News Sentinel shows that it knows a good idea when it sees one. Today's headline, "7 minutes, 2 people, 1 killing" comes right from last week's Erie Times-News: "2 days, 3 first, 3 lives lost."

The newspaper with the best front design today is The State for its clear presentation of a story that's sure to sell.

What a difference a day makes! Yesterday, The State tried to attract readers with pretty flowers. Today it came back with a barn-burner of a story. Compare this page to today's Virginian-Pilot – this old codger couldn't attract fleas. This Freddy Krueger-look-alike looks like he's had one too many joy rides – I doubt that he'll sell any newspapers.

Our research indictes that headlines sell papers far more so than images. Today's State shows how to play a story to sell.

The Californian's redesign earned it a spot on Editor & Publisher's list of “Ten That Do it Right.” According to E&P, Bakersfield is appealing to its “really, really conservative market with a really, really radical redesign.”

The Eureka (CA) Reporter was just a 6,000-circ. weekly in 2004. Our radical yet elegant redesign helped this startup weekly grow to a daily in less than two years. The Reporter goes head-to-head with an established daily owned by Dean Singleton, who told The San Francisco Chronicle last month that his competitor, “does some good design things.” The Society of News Design agrees – they cited this redesign as one of the best in the world.
