The News Virginian went huge with "Huge letdown."
Link's dollar-bill-based illustration was wrapped tighter than
Cleveland's yesterday. The
Las Vegas Sun featured a nice, clean illustration on its front. The
Johnson City Press had an excellent news photo from a fire. The
Winston-Salem Journal made a montage of mugs. Neil Diamond rocked the top of
The Kansas City Star – to the extent he can rock. Neil Young he's not.
West Hawaii Today caught a wave.
The Detroit News ran a front-page editorial today, but it was several days late and many billions short of this effort from the
Freep.
The newspaper with the best front design today is Redeye for its extraordinary use of images.
Redeye has decided: the eyes have it. It's safe to assume that everyone in Chicagoland can recognize these characters without the need to see more of them or even identify them with a caption or label. While these crops may be too severe in most instances, they served to create a powerful cover today.
“Every photo needs a cutline” – that's a cardinal rule. But rules are made to be broken, as long as we know when to break them.
Today's Redeye is the exception that proves the rule.
