The State lit up the season – both above and below the fold. The
Pocono Record made a poor color choice on its map: Yellow tied it to the ad below the fold rather than the related, blue-hued photo directly beneath it. The
Chicago Tribune was a mish-mash of typefaces, rounded-corner boxes and red borders. Maybe its designers hit the eggnog early.
The Plain Dealer hammered home the housing story, while
Redeye nailed its movie review with a clever headline and image.
The newspaper with the best front design today is the Rocky Mountain News for a story-telling Christmas photo from here and now.
The Enterprise retold the Christmas Story.
The Forum and the
SunHerald retold another. So did the
News & Record. Are any of these stories news? All of these papers used illustrations that were better suited to a grandma's greeting card than a daily newspaper.
In contrast, the Rocky Mountain News did Christmas with more class, using a poignant photo that told a story of here and now, rather than retelling one from thousands of miles away and thousands of years ago.
