Today marks the end of the year and the end of the year-end packages, beginning with:
A tale of two 2008 grids –
Waco was wacky compared to
Salt Lake, which handled it with more aplomb.
The News Leader did it with digits, at the expense of the photos. The
Wyoming Tribune Eagle was stunningly straightforward in its year-end wrap up, picking the top local and national stories instead of the denary-centric ten.
Elsewhere, there were striking similarities, between:
The newspaper with the best front design today is the Chicago Tribune for its follow through below the fold.
It doesn't take much design skill to run a 6-col. photo above the fold. But the fold marks the dividing line between the designers and the decorators.
Today's Trib got past the big photo and handled the smaller words of the big story with its readers in mind. All the Blago-related elements were arranged to form a clearly organized package. The Trib provided enough text to begin the main story while providing fast facts in the form of "What the players said" and "What could happen next."
And the Trib didn't stop designing when it reached the bottom of the page. Downpage promos were handled with the same skill seen above.
Today's page is reminiscent of
this Trib page from 2006.
